Pro Tools mono phase: Invert Phase, mono button, AU/AAX notes vs spectral phase repair
Avid Pro Tools Control Room / monitor headphones can hide cancel. Track Invert Phase, the mono button (or Master mono fold), small delay align, and honest stereo FX come first. Frequency-aware phase repair belongs only after residual L/R fights remain on stereo beds. Distinct DAW niche (not folk-instrument pages). Cross-links: polarity, vs time-align, null-test, when-not.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. It is not AAX. Pro Tools is primarily an AAX host; use stock Invert Phase + mono button for the check, and load PHIXER as VST3/CLAP/AU in a host that supports those formats (or AU on Mac where your Pro Tools / bridge workflow allows). Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. Polarity and timing first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights.
What Pro Tools mono-phase failure sounds like
- Mono button on Master / Control Room thins a bus or AUX. Stereo reverb, delay, or widener beds look huge in headphones, then mono fold eats Mid body.
- Invert Phase never tried on dual paths. Dual DI+mic, dual-cab, or parallel buses cancel until you invert one track.
- Stereo AUX sends without a mono proof. Returns fight dry when the mono button engages.
- AAX stereo imagers on Groups. Third-party wideners feel wide in Pro Tools; phone and club mono fold thin the kick or vocal chest.
- Fine in Pro Tools headphones, broken on bounce or livestream. Same destinations as YouTube / social mono and null-test workflow.
Fast Pro Tools mono audition (about 60 seconds)
- Engage the mono button on the Master / Control Room / monitor path (or insert a mono-fold utility). Toggle it; do not leave it on.
- A/B critical Groups, AUX returns, and stereo inserts with mono engaged. Note kick body, bass Mid, vocal chest, stereo return bloom.
- Solo pairs that share energy: kick vs bass bus, vocal vs stereo AUX, layered clip stacks.
- Optional: watch a correlation meter on Master, then with mono off so you hear stereo again.
Order of operations in Pro Tools (before spectral phase rotation)
1. Invert Phase on one path
Use track Invert Phase (ø) on one path of a dual DI+mic, dual-cab, or parallel bus when body returns immediately. Guide: polarity vs phase.
2. Small delay align (not Haas width)
Nudge the secondary clip or use a short delay (samples/ms) to match the hero. Do not use Haas L/R delay as "width" before a mono-button check. Cousin: vs time-align.
3. Mono button honestly
The mono button (or Master mono fold) is a check and a destination fold, not a repair. If mono kills the part, fix Invert Phase and routing first. Do not "rescue" with more stereo imagers.
4. AUX returns and Send levels
Stereo AUX returns often cause Mid cancel when summed with dry. Mono-check with AUX muted vs open. Prefer mono-safe lows on critical returns. Related: stereo reverb mono.
5. AAX vs VST3/CLAP/AU availability
Pro Tools inserts are typically AAX. PHIXER ships VST3, CLAP, and AU (Win/Mac/Linux as listed on the product page) and does not ship AAX. Use Invert Phase + mono button inside Pro Tools for polarity and fold. For residual spectral repair, load PHIXER in a VST3/CLAP/AU host, or use AU on Mac only where your Pro Tools version / bridge supports non-AAX formats. Format choice never replaces Invert Phase or clip nudge.
6. Only then residual spectral repair
If a stereo bed must stay stereo and mono still hollows a band after Invert Phase, delay, mono-button honesty, and AUX hygiene, PHIXER can help in a compatible host. Prove with mono A/B, plugin bypassed vs engaged.
Pro Tools path types and typical failure modes
| Path | Common mono failure | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Mono button on Master / CR | Buses / AUX hollow | Invert Phase; quieter stereo Sends |
| Stereo AUX returns | Dry+wet hollow Mid | Lower Send; mono-safe return lows |
| AAX widener on Group | Huge in cans, thin on phone | Bypass imager; mono button proof |
| Parallel bus / clip gain stack | Dry + parallel cancel body | Invert Phase; align; simplify parallel |
| Bounce / livestream fold | Fine in PT cans, hollow on phone | YouTube mono / mono button habit |
Pro Tools mono fold checklist (to bounce or stream)
1. Keep a mono-button toggle
Make Master / Control Room mono muscle memory before bounce or livestream. Do not trust Pro Tools headphones alone.
2. Invert Phase on dual paths first
Flip ø on secondary DI, bottom snare, room, or parallel bus. If body returns, you are done for that pair.
3. Audit AUX muted vs open under mono
Find which stereo return eats Mid. Lower Send level or simplify the return.
4. Bypass AAX wideners during the check
Prove the bed without imagers. If mono is fine without them and broken with them, the widener is the problem.
5. Re-check after bus or Session rebuilds
New parallel buses and commits alter polarity and latency. Invert Phase and mono-button again after you commit.
6. Format reality check for PHIXER
If you need residual spectral repair, confirm you can load VST3/CLAP/AU somewhere in the pipeline. Do not expect a stock AAX-only insert list to show PHIXER.
When PHIXER helps around a Pro Tools session
- The material is already stereo and must stay stereo (stereo clip, stereo bus print, stereo AUX bed).
- Invert Phase, delay align, mono-button honesty, and AUX levels are cleaned up, but mono still hollows a band.
- You can A/B mono with PHIXER bypassed (in a VST3/CLAP/AU host) and hear clearer body or Mid without wrecking the image.
- You are not using it to replace Invert Phase, clip nudge, or to rescue extreme AAX widener settings.
Decision table
| You notice… | First try | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Body thins when mono button engages | Invert Phase; quieter stereo Sends | Fold reveals Side-only energy |
| AUX open hollows Mid | Lower Send; mono-safe return | Dry+wet fold |
| AAX imager huge in cans, thin on phone | Bypass imager; center lows | Width ≠ phase repair |
| Stereo bed still cancels by band | PHIXER in VST3/CLAP/AU host | Residual spectral L/R fight |
| Mono clip alone is dull | Tone / EQ / gain / clip choice | Not an L/R repair job |
When NOT to use PHIXER here
- You have not mono-button auditioned yet.
- The fix is obviously Invert Phase, clip nudge, quieter AUX Send, or bypassing a widener.
- You want PHIXER to make the Session wider or "more Pro Tools." Wrong job.
- You expect an AAX download; PHIXER does not ship AAX.
- The path is mono and the print problem is balance or EQ.
- See also when not to use PHIXER.
Quick path: Mono button → Invert Phase on dual paths → delay-align secondary (not Haas) → honest AUX returns → AAX widener bypass for proof → PHIXER (VST3/CLAP/AU host) only for leftover stereo cancellation → fold again before bounce or stream.
